Punishing The Blue, Rewarding The Red

quote[Analysts have said that losing the base could cost Connecticut as many as 31,000 jobs, more than 8,000 of them at the base itself. The other predicted job losses would come from a $2.5 billion economic ripple effect expected to spread to the manufacturing industry, the submarine industry, local businesses and even schools.]

Never mind the fact that the economic cleanup costs will far outweigh the money that the pentagon "claims" will be saved by moving the subs away (from where they are created/maintained) and down to Georgia (Bush country).

There's a little more here, where C.T. Sen. Chris Dodd says, "...Navy officials who calculated the cost at $29 million were "living in Disneyland."

Unfortunately, the MSM doesn't seem to be picking up on the environmental effects of closing the base or even really the severity of the economicic repercussions. Here is an example of how even the local media is treating this story in an insanely lame fashion. There, after presenting a case of how polluted the base is, they finish it of by saying, "As of 2002, millions of dollars have been spent on cleaning up a handful of sites. It's expected to cost tens of millions to finish it all."

Pathetic.

I understand that this may appear to be a local issue, but similar things are (obviously) happening all across the country. Where is the outrage at Bush pandering to his corporate fat-cats? It is them, after all, who will be richly rewarded by being awarded the cleanup contracts.

(For Sheri, who requested I do something on this subject, I hope I delivered).
