Identity of 'Deep Throat' Source Revealed

quote[A hit movie starring Robert Redford as Woodward, Dustin Hoffman as Bernstein and Hal Holbrook as Deep Throat was made in 1976. In the film, Holbrook's shadowy, cigarette-smoking character would meet Redford in dark parking garages and provide clues about the scandal.]

In case you missed it today...

Related, I think that Woodward and Bernstein should be offered high jobs in the CIA or government - they've proven their ability to keep their mouths shut.

The Jungle In The Desert

quote[George Santayana once wrote, “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” It is an old adage, yet has contemporary meaning for an arrogant nation that continues to overestimate its own power and underestimate the power of the “rag-tag armies.”]

This was a great article. Read it.

Fox News Admits Bias!

quote[Even we at Fox News manage to get some lefties on the air occasionally, and often let them finish their sentences before we club them to death and feed the scraps to Karl Rove and Bill O'Reilly. And those who hate us can take solace in the fact that they aren't subsidizing Bill's bombast; we payers of the BBC license fee don't enjoy that peace of mind.

Fox News is, after all, a private channel and our presenters are quite open about where they stand on particular stories. That's our appeal. People watch us because they know what they are getting. The Beeb's institutionalized leftism would be easier to tolerate if the corporation was a little more honest about it.]

Gitmo Detainees Say They Were Sold

Bombing Raids Tried To Goad Saddam Into War

quote[THE RAF and US aircraft doubled the rate at which they were dropping bombs on Iraq in 2002 in an attempt to provoke Saddam Hussein into giving the allies an excuse for war, new evidence has shown.]

But, of course, we already knew that.

When The President Talks To God

quote[When the president talks to God
Are the conversations brief or long?
Does he ask to rape our women's rights
And send poor farm kids off to die?
Does God suggest an oil hike
When the presi

I'd never heard of this guy before, but I like his message.

Thanks Sheri.

Republican Senator Breaks Down On Floor Over Bolton

It Won't Be Long Before This Is Reality

Bush Admits He Just Keeps Repeating Himself

[Audio File]

IS GEORGE BUSH A LIAR?

quote[The American public has now had 4 years of what is loosely called “Bush Leadership.” According to most polls, about half of the nation thinks G.W.Bush is some kind of heroic or even saintly figure, and the other half thinks he is a shallow smirking strutting popinjay who is determined to destroy the democracy he found intact when he was given the Presidency by the Supreme Court.

Many people have charged that he has a firm propensity to misinform, deceive or even maliciously lie in order to gain some corporate goal advantage. Other people believe he talks to his God and therefore would not ever lie.

Perhaps asking some rhetorical questions might clarify the issue of whether Bush deliberately lies, makes simple but good-hearted mistakes, and is an innocent person who is deceived by bad people, or follows advice from his God.]

This contains a pretty good list.

Helen Thomas Tears McClellan A New One

quote[Q The other day -- in fact, this week, you said that we, the United States, is in Afghanistan and Iraq by invitation. Would you like to correct that incredible distortion of American history --

MR. McCLELLAN: No, we are -- that's where we currently --

Q -- in view of your credibility is already mired? How can you say that?

MR. McCLELLAN: Helen, I think everyone in this room knows that you're taking that comment out of context. There are two democratically-elected governments in Iraq and --

Q Were we invited into Iraq?

MR. McCLELLAN: There are two democratically-elected governments now in Iraq and Afghanistan, and we are there at their invitation. They are sovereign governments, and we are there today --

Q You mean if they had asked us out, that we would have left?

MR. McCLELLAN: No, Helen, I'm talking about today. We are there at their invitation. They are sovereign governments -- Q I'm talking about today, too.

MR. McCLELLAN: -- and we are doing all we can to train and equip their security forces so that they can provide for their own security as they move forward on a free and democratic future. Q Did we invade those countries?

MR. McCLELLAN: Go ahead, Steve.]

The Right Cries Foul As Bush Is Foiled

quote[From today forward, as Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, pointed out, the White House will be obliged to "consult" with members of both parties before they send up judicial nominees, including anyone nominated to the Supreme Court if and when any of the current justices steps down. Having assumed that the Senate existed to do its will, the Bush administration has been notified instead that it will now operate under constraints imposed by the Democratic minority and the Republican moderates.]

Aww, let them whine.

More Good News That Americans Are Waking Up

Foreign Companies Pay to Influence U.S. Policy

quote[The army of lobbyists working behind the scenes to affect federal legislation and agency regulations now count some 650 foreign companies among their clients, which are seeking to influence everything from America's defense contracting and pharmaceutical policies to the sort of environmental matters that literally affect U.S. soil, according to an analysis by the Center for Public Integrity.]

Breakthrough Pact Unlikely To End Battle

quote[After that, no one can say with certainty whether the deal will stick, particularly if there is a Supreme Court nomination in the near future, as many anticipate. The 14 senators who joined hands last night said theirs is an agreement based on faith and goodwill, but there is no certainty or even commitment that they will continue to operate as a group once past the current nominees in question.]

Trust me, this issue is far from over. Just wait until Rhenquist retires this summer - I predict the "nookular option" will be back on the table.

White House Wants FBI To Be Able To Track Mail

The Next Part Of The Axis Of Evil?

quote[Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said on Sunday his government was interested in nuclear energy and could start talks with Iranian partners to study possible atomic and solar power projects.]

Ahhh, global domination. So close, yet so far...

Newsweek Speaks Out

quote[One of the frustrating aspects of our initial inquiry is that we seem to have taken so many appropriate steps in reporting the Guantanamo story. On the basis of what we know now, I've seen nothing to suggest that our people acted unethically or unprofessionally. Veteran reporter Michael Isikoff relied on a well-placed and historically reliable government source. We sought comment from one military spokesman (he declined) and provided the entire story to a senior Defense Department official, who disputed one assertion (which we changed) and said nothing about the charge of abusing the Qur'an. Had he objected to the allegations, I am confident that we would have at the very least revised the item, but we mistakenly took the official's silence for confirmation.]

About time.

The Downing Street "Memo"

quote[The contents of the memo are shocking. The minutes detail how our government did not believe Iraq was a greater threat than other nations; how intelligence was "fixed" to sell the case for war to the American public; and how the Bush administration’s public assurances of "war as a last resort" were at odds with their privately stated intentions.]

This is a very good resource (if you can't read for yourself).

No Tin Foil Hat Needed, Snopes To The Rescue (Still, Avoid The Kool-Aide)

quote[Recall that when the first airliner was flown into a World Trade Center tower on September 11 — before it was known that the "accident" was really part of a deliberate terrorist attack — newscasters were speculating that a small plane had accidentally flown into the side of the tower, because the visible exterior damage didn't seem as extensive as what people thought a large airliner would cause. Even though the two airplanes flown into the World Trade Center towers were travelling faster at the time of impact than the Pentagon plane was (400 MPH vs. 350 MPH), hit aluminum-and-glass buildings rather than reinforced concrete walls, and didn't dissipate much of their energy striking the ground first (as the Pentagon plane did), they still barely penetrated all the way through the WTC towers.]

In case you missed it, this is in reponse to an earlier post. I have to thank Sheri for pointing out what I should've done ( I thought of it, but then got lazy).

Kinky Shopper KOed By Vibrating Knickers

quote[Unfortunately, she became "so aroused by the 2½-inch vibrating bullet inside that she fainted" then "fell against shelves and banged her head". This prompted the attendance of the paramedics who "found the black leatherette panties still buzzing". Having disabled the orgasmatronic underwear, they then whisked the senseless shopper to hospital where she made a complete recovery. Staff handed her back the Passion Pants upon discharge, discreetly concealed in a plastic bag.]

50 Ways To Get Fired

quote[ Are you tired of slaving away for that shithead boss who's 14-year-old niece could probably do his job better. Are you sick of those co-workers who come to your desk every day and ask to borrow pencils and staples when your cubicle is right next to the supply closet. Do you wish you didn't have to hide in the shitter and sleep on a roll of toilet paper to pass the time at your boring job? Well, we here at the Phat Phree feel your pain. This month’s installment of the Top 50 list is full of ways to quickly get yourself out of that crappy, dead-end job.]

I thought this was pretty funny (I'm still trying for a fun Friday theme).

Pornstar To Dine With President Bush

quote["I'm especially looking forward to meeting Karl Rove," Carey added. "Smart men like him are so sexy. I know that he's against gay marriage, but I think I can convince him that a little girl-on-girl action now and then isn't so bad!"]

WTF? At first, I thought this was a joke.

Don't Let Republican Leadership "Go Nuclear" on Supreme Court

quote[We could lose our fight against a right-wing Supreme Court takeover before a vacancy and nomination occur – even as early as this month. This threat comes in the form of the “nuclear option” being considered by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) and being pushed by the Religious Right, who would like President Bush’s Supreme Court nominees to be rubber stamped.]

Okay, I can't recall how many stories I've posted about the fillibuster rules change attempts, but they (the repugs) are trying to push hard to get it passed within the next week.

This (the above link) is probably the most informative and concise website on the subject and on what you can do about it.

Newsweek Was Right

quote[The Bush Administration's aggressive response to a Newsweek story alleging that US interrogators at Guantanamo Bay flushed the Koran down the toilet in front of Islamic detainees displays the height of hypocrisy. After Newsweek clumsily issued an apology, followed by a retraction, White House spokesman Scott McClellan called on the magazine to "help repair the damage that has been done, particularly in the region," by explaining "what happened and why they got it wrong." Maybe the Bush Administration should do the same, by opening up its secret facilities for inspection to the Red Cross and other third-party observers. We are printing below a letter from reader Calgacus--a pseudonym for a researcher in the national security field for the past twenty years--that shows how the desecration of the Koran became standard US interrogation practice.]

I think Michael Isikoff could end the whole ordeal by naming his "source." It would probably be more embarrassing to the white house than to Newsweek.

Uzbekistan Unbound

quote[ The Bush Administration's response to the butchery was both comical and sad. "We have some concerns about human rights in Uzbekistan, but we are concerned about the outbreak of violence, particularly by some members of a terrorist group freed from prison," Scott McClellan said. "The people of Uzbekistan want to see more representative and democratic government, but that should come through peaceful means, not through violence."]

The repug's are just to damned good at speaking out of both sides of their mouths.

House Dems To Hold Forum On Media Bias Tuesday With Franken, Brock, Others

quote[“I think a number of Democratic members have been disturbed about what is and what isn’t being covered in the corporate news media," a House aide said, speaking of the event. "Specifically, there’s been a great deal of disappointment of the media’s coverage of the Iraq war and the Downing Street memo and great concern about the White House’s efforts to intimidate media outlets such as they’ve done in the Newsweek matter.”]

It's about time.

Are the Dem's finally getting a backbone??

Put On The Tin-Foil Hats, And Adjust The Frequency (But Avoid The Kool-Aide)

I personaly (do not want to believe any of it) don't believe it to be true.

New Federal Guidelines Will Allow Creation of Human-Animals Chimeras

quote[A new set of guidelines for human embryonic stem cell research issued Monday by the National Academies of Sciences would permit the creation of human-animal hybrids, but would not allow them to breed. The guidelines permit the introduction of human embryonic stem cells into nonhuman mammals, "under circumstances where no other experiment can provide the information needed."]

I'm generally all for stem cell research, but this seems to be crossing the line a bit to much for me.

Punishing The Blue, Rewarding The Red

quote[Analysts have said that losing the base could cost Connecticut as many as 31,000 jobs, more than 8,000 of them at the base itself. The other predicted job losses would come from a $2.5 billion economic ripple effect expected to spread to the manufacturing industry, the submarine industry, local businesses and even schools.]

Never mind the fact that the economic cleanup costs will far outweigh the money that the pentagon "claims" will be saved by moving the subs away (from where they are created/maintained) and down to Georgia (Bush country).

There's a little more here, where C.T. Sen. Chris Dodd says, "...Navy officials who calculated the cost at $29 million were "living in Disneyland."

Unfortunately, the MSM doesn't seem to be picking up on the environmental effects of closing the base or even really the severity of the economicic repercussions. Here is an example of how even the local media is treating this story in an insanely lame fashion. There, after presenting a case of how polluted the base is, they finish it of by saying, "As of 2002, millions of dollars have been spent on cleaning up a handful of sites. It's expected to cost tens of millions to finish it all."

Pathetic.

I understand that this may appear to be a local issue, but similar things are (obviously) happening all across the country. Where is the outrage at Bush pandering to his corporate fat-cats? It is them, after all, who will be richly rewarded by being awarded the cleanup contracts.

(For Sheri, who requested I do something on this subject, I hope I delivered).

Myers Admits The U.S. Failed To Kill The Iraqi Resistance

quote[Gen. Richard Myers, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff admitted on Tuesday that the Iraqi resistance is "about where it was a year ago". However, Myers insists the U.S.-led occupation forces are winning the war and is confident of victory.

“I’m going to say this: I think we are winning, okay. I think we’re definitely winning. I think we’ve been winning for some time..”]

How can he possibly say we are winning if we've made no progress?

Navy Judge Finds War Protest Reasonable

The resignation of Scott McClellan

quote[Whenever I hear Scott McClellan talking about ‘media credibility,’ I strain to remember who it was who admitted Jeff Gannon to the White House press room and called on him all those times.

Whenever I hear this White House talking about ‘doing to damage to our image abroad’ and how ‘people have lost lives,’ I strain to remember who it was who went traipsing into Iraq looking for WMD that will apparently turn up just after the Holy Grail will — and at what human cost.]

The quote pretty much sums up my thoughts on this.

O'Reilly's Ratings Tumble

Considering the detruction this can cause, I probably shouldn't be thinking how cool this might be. According to my local meteorologist, we might even be able to see the aurora (in Connecticut!) this week because of it.

Media still claim "nuclear option" is a Democratic term

quote[Major news outlets have continued to misattribute the term "nuclear option" to Senate Democrats even though it was coined by Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS), one of the leading advocates of the proposed change to Senate rules that would bar the filibuster of judicial nominees. Moreover, it was only after Republican strategists deemed the term a political liability that Republican senators began to attribute it to Democrats. Many in the news media have followed suit, repeating the Republicans' false attribution of the term to the Democrats.]

Yeah, that damned liberal media!

Google Redraws World According To George Bush

Buchanan Says WW2 Wasn't Worth It

quote[But Buchanan's comments on the Don Imus radio show and in an essay posted on the Web site of his organization, The American Cause, went much further. This, my friends, is exactly what scares me about the neoconservative agenda.

Secrecy, Propaganda Seen Sweeping U.S.

quote[Contrary to the conventional wisdom here that U.S. media are the freest in the world, the United States has suffered ''notable setbacks'' in press freedom and has slipped among countries tracked by the New York-based rights group Freedom House.

The organisation, in an annual survey released in advance of Tuesday's commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, said media in Finland, Iceland, and Sweden faced the fewest fetters in 2004 while the most restrictions were slapped on journalists in North Korea, Burma (also known as Myanmar), Cuba, and Turkmenistan.

The United States was tied with Barbados, Canada, Dominica, Estonia, and Latvia at 24th place out of 194 countries covered in the survey. ]

The Right Wing Wants Your Ass (And by Ass I Mean Donkey)

quote[Last night, anti-abortion extremist Neal Horsley was a guest on The Alan Colmes Show, a FOX News radio program. The topic was an interesting one - whether or not an internet service provider should allow Horsley to post the names of abortion doctors on his website. Horsley does that as a way of targeting them and one doctor has been killed. In the course of the interview, however, Colmes asked Horsley about his background, including a statement that he had admitted to engaging in homosexual and bestiality sex.

At first, Horsley laughed and said, "Just because it's printed in the media, people jump to believe it."

"Is it true?" Colmes asked.

"Hey, Alan, if you want to accuse me of having sex when I was a fool, I did everything that crossed my mind that looked like I..."

AC: "You had sex with animals?"

NH: "Absolutely. I was a fool. When you grow up on a farm in Georgia, your first girlfriend is a mule."]

Captured Al-Qaeda kingpin is case of ‘mistaken identity’

quote[THE capture of a supposed Al-Qaeda kingpin by Pakistani agents last week was hailed by President George W Bush as “a critical victory in the war on terror”. According to European intelligence experts, however, Abu Faraj al-Libbi was not the terrorists’ third in command, as claimed, but a middle-ranker derided by one source as “among the flotsam and jetsam” of the organisation.]

Iran Confirms Conversion of Uranium

quote[Iran confirmed for the first time Monday that it converted 37 tons of raw uranium into gas, a key step ahead of enrichment, before it suspended all such activities in November under international pressure.

'Pleasure Marriages' Regain Popularity In Iraq

quote[The 1,400-year-old practice of muta'a- "ecstasy" in Arabic - is as old as Islam itself. It was permitted by the prophet Mohammed as a way to ensure a respectable means of income for widowed women.]

Considering that a 26 year old woman in Afghanistan was stoned to death earlier this week for premarital relations, I find this interesting.

I guess it just goes to show that the rules of any religion can be bent towards whatever will is desired - especially when that will is of those that are uniquely qualified to interpret the religion: men.

FDA wants sperm banks to bar donors who've had gay sex

Note To Bush: Remember The Non-Proliferation Treaties, Dumbass

quote[A nuclear weapon that is exploded underground can destroy a deeply buried bunker efficiently and requires significantly less power to do so than a nuclear weapon detonated on the surface would, says a new report from the National Academies' National Research Council.
