If It Happened There ... the Government Shutdown

The typical signs of state failure aren’t evident on the streets of this sleepy capital city. Beret-wearing colonels have not yet taken to the airwaves to declare martial law. Money-changers are not yet buying stacks of useless greenbacks on the street. But the pleasant autumn weather disguises a government teetering on the brink. Because, at midnight Monday night, the government of this intensely proud and nationalistic people will shut down, a drastic sign of political dysfunction in this moribund republic.
It's full of hyperbole. But, then, isn't our media?

Fox Complains Unopened Obamacare Exchanges Haven't Insured Enough Americans Yet

During the September 27 edition of Fox & Friends, co-host Steve Doocy misleadingly suggested that the health care reform law had failed to insure many Americans who currently lack health insurance coverage:
Steve Doocy. Of course.

Water on Mars!

What jumps out of the analysis right away is that the soil — mostly sandy grains dug from a mound in a spot known as Rocknest, inside of Gale Crater — is the presence of water, which adds up to about 2% of the soil, by weight. “If you took a cubic foot of this material and heated it,” says Leshin, “you’d about get two pints of water. I think that’s pretty amazing.”
Something good in the news...

Moving The Goalposts: CNN Now Says Gingrich Is "Not In Violation" Of Network Rules

We are clarifying the policy and making it clear Newt Gingrich is not in violation. The policy: If a Crossfire co-host has made a financial contribution to a politician who appears on the program or is the focus of the program, disclosure is not required during the show since the co-host's political support is obvious by his or her point of view expressed on the program.
CNN is irrelevant. Does anyone actually watch it anymore?

New App Lets You Boycott Koch Brothers, Monsanto And More By Scanning Your Shopping Cart

Buycott shows you a product's corporate family tree while you shop. In her keynote speech at last year’s annual Netroots Nation gathering, Darcy Burner pitched a seemingly simple idea to the thousands of bloggers and web developers in the audience. The former Microsoft MSFT +0.94% programmer and congressional candidate proposed a smartphone app allowing shoppers to swipe barcodes to check whether conservative billionaire industrialists Charles and David Koch were behind a product on the shelves.
Awesome!

Government Lab Reveals It Has Operated Quantum Internet for Over Two Years

One of the dreams for security experts is the creation of a quantum internet that allows perfectly secure communication based on the powerful laws of quantum mechanics. The basic idea here is that the act of measuring a quantum object, such as a photon, always changes it. So any attempt to eavesdrop on a quantum message cannot fail to leave telltale signs of snooping that the receiver can detect. That allows anybody to send a “one-time pad” over a quantum network which can then be used for secure communication using conventional classical communication.
That's pretty cool!

Dick Cheney slams Obama administration's Benghazi performance as 'a failure of leadership ... I cannot understand why they weren't ready'

Former Vice President Dick Cheney criticized the Obama administration on Tuesday for its handling of the September 11, 2012 terror attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, calling it 'a failure of leadership.' Cheney said U.S. leaders should have been better prepared for violence on the anniversary of the al-Qaeda attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001.
Seriously????

Go fuck yourself, Cheney!

U.S. Lawmaker Proposes New Criteria for Choosing NSF Grants

The legislation, being worked up by Representative Lamar Smith (R-TX), represents the latest—and bluntest—attack on NSF by congressional Republicans seeking to halt what they believe is frivolous and wasteful research being funded in the social sciences.
Seriously, WTFF??!!?!?!?!? He wants to kill peer review? This was also the genius behind SOPA.

American Media: Keeping Us Scared For Money Since (at least) 2001!

Number of cases recovering purified ricin during the war on terror: 0 Number of deaths from ricin used in terror plots: 0 Number of men arrested in the US, for messing with castor seeds: about a dozen, one of them recently deceased.
Sheesh! This is fucking ridiculous.

Yeah, Jindal fucked this one up.

Grover Norquist, the intellectual leader of the anti-tax crowd in Washington, had praised Jindal’s plan as “the boldest, most pro-growth state tax reform in U.S. history.” He noted that it was particularly significant, because with Obama positioned to veto anything resembling the House GOP’s budget for the next several years, Louisiana might be Republicans’ best chance to show off their tax ideas on the state level. “The national media and Acela-corridor crowd continue to focus on the bickering Washington, but they can learn what real tax reform looks like by looking to Louisiana,” Norquist said. It didn’t turn out that way. Only 27 percent of Louisiana voters supported the plan in the latest SMOR poll versus a whopping 63 percent opposed. The idea didn’t even garner majority support among Republicans. According to SMOR pollster Bernie Pinsonat, Jindal’s true approval is likely even lower than their mid-March poll indicated.
How could they possibly field such horrible ideas and still survive? This is insanity? Are people finally waking up?!?!?!?

What does Treasury have to do with embassy security?

Ask the overgrown toddler party. Apparently, they are as focused as a dog with a bone (with about as much intelligence), and felt the need to grill the treasury nominee on Benghazi. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/13/jack-lew-benghazi_n_2681009.html Remember, these are the same hypocritical idiots that opposed the 9/11 commission and investigation. -P

And they did it, They filibustered Hagel.

“This is the first time in the history of our country that a presidential nominee for secretary of defense has been filibustered. What a shame,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said on the floor of the chamber.
Proving they are just a bunch of children wearing grown up clothes (again), they filibustered their former republican colleague. I blame this one on Harry Reid. I knew years ago they would NEVER honor any gentlemen's agreement. Why didn't Reid? Right now, I'm inclined to cut a check to ANYONE who opposes him just to get the spineless twerp OUT of the the Senate. Reid, this is on YOU!

Fearless brain-damaged patients are terrified of suffocation: study

S.M., for example, started to frantically wave her hand near the mask about 8 seconds after inhalation, and then screamed for help. “It felt like my throat was closing up… I couldn’t breathe,” she told the researchers in an interview afterwards. When asked how it had made her feel, she replied: “Panic, mostly, because I didn’t know what the hell was going on.” She described the feeling as the worst one she’d ever had, and expressed surprise at her reaction, because she couldn’t remember having reacted in that way ever before.
Fascinating...

Biochemist creates wine to fight arthritis and chronic fatigue

“We take this antioxidant, which exists in tiny amounts in wine, to a level where it can actually do something,” he told AFP on Tuesday. Jardine said loading up wine with antioxidants usually made it too tannic and undrinkable, but by also making the antioxidants more fat-soluble, and more easily absorbed by the body, they surprisingly also became more palatable.
Any excuse to drink more wine...

Security guard leaves gun unattended in restroom at Lapeer charter school

A security officer at a Lapeer charter school left a firearm unattended in a school bathroom on Monday, Jan. 14, a school official said. The security officer "made a breach in security protocol" and left an unloaded weapon in a restroom "for a few moments," said Chatfield School Director Matt Young. Young said the school has been in contact with local authorities about the matter and wouldn't discuss any possible repercussion for the officer, calling it "a personnel matter." Young also declined to name the security officer.
Still think it's a great idea to arm teachers???

Glenbeckibeckibeckistanstan to Become A Reality?

The ambitious project, projected to cost over two billion dollars, has been heavily influenced by Walt Disney. As Glenn has been explaining throughout the week, Disneyland was originally intended to be a place where people would find happiness, inspiration, courage and hope. Over time, Walt Disney’s original vision has been lost. While hundreds of thousands still flock to the town, it’s become commercialized and the big dreams and the heart have been compromised.
Yeah, this'll be a hit! And it was already predicted:

Real Hobbitts?!?!?

"Remarkably, the feet were also long relative to the legs, as fantasy fans might expect of a Hobbit," he added.

Winds of Winter: Preview Chapter

On the morning that she left the Water Gardens, her father rose from his chair to kiss her on both cheeks. "The fate of Dorne goes with you, daughter," he said, as he pressed the parchment into her hand. "Go swiftly, go safely, be my eyes and ears and voice... but most of all, take care."
Will it really be here this year???

Limbaugh: Liberals pushing LGBT rights to ‘normalize pedophilia’

“They make the case that kids enjoy it, adults enjoy it; what’s wrong with a little love? The same things that were said about gay marriage,” he continued. Raw Story (http://s.tt/1y8wL)

Signs at Milford School District playgrounds spark controversy

For the last year, signs at two Milford School District playgrounds tell English readers that adult supervision is required to use the facility, along with a warning to play at their own risk. Spanish readers get a much stricter message. They are told they need permission to use the facilities – and that they could be subject to police action if they don’t have permission.
Wow! Just wow!

Tucker Carlson: ‘People despise you when you wear a bow tie’

Conservative Daily Caller founder Tucker Carlson on Sunday suggested that the reason he had been unpopular with liberals for years was because “people despise you when you wear a bow tie.” Raw Story (http://s.tt/1y1Ka)
No, Tucker (shakes head. People despise you when you are Tucker Carlson...
