Obamamania, meet Hulkamania

quote["Nobody's even asked me my opinion until now," Hogan lamented when Kimmel wanted to know who Hulkamania's momentum would be behind in the coming election. "If I had to step out, and say who I really believe in — that catches my ear, that makes sense, that really can make a change — I would say Obama. Everybody plays this card — the bad guy card, you know the dirty politics thing, talk about the way people dress, act and look — and, he’s the choice. He seems like the real deal, you know.”]

I knew there was a reason I idolized him as a kid...

Is Romney On The Way Out?

quote[With five days to go until Super Tuesday, Mitt Romney's spokesperson is confirming that the Romney campaign has bought exactly zero TV ad time in any of the states that vote on Feb. 5.

"We currently haven't purchased any ad time yet," Romney spokesperson Kevin Madden confirmed to Election Central, when asked about Feb. 5th states.

The Associated Press, relying on anonymous officials, reported the lack of any ad buying on the Romney campaign's part. The Politico also confirmed this late yesterday evening.

Even more interesting, Madden also refused to say whether the campaign would be buying any ad time in any Feb. 5th state. Asked if Romney would buy any time, Madden said: "We don't telegraph strategic decisions like ad buying ahead of time."

This suggests the possibility that the campaign won't be buying any time in advance of the multi-state showdown that is likely to decide the race. At the least, this is a big boost for John McCain. At the most, it could amount to a possible admission that the Romney camp thinks the race is pretty much over.]

Hmmmm...

Soldier Suicides at Record Level

quote[At the same time, the number of attempted suicides or self-inflicted injuries in the Army has jumped sixfold since the Iraq war began. Last year, about 2,100 soldiers injured themselves or attempted suicide, compared with about 350 in 2002, according to the U.S. Army Medical Command Suicide Prevention Action Plan.

The Army was unprepared for the high number of suicides and cases of post-traumatic stress disorder among its troops, as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have continued far longer than anticipated. Many Army posts still do not offer enough individual counseling and some soldiers suffering psychological problems complain that they are stigmatized by commanders. Over the past year, four high-level commissions have recommended reforms and Congress has given the military hundreds of millions of dollars to improve its mental health care, but critics charge that significant progress has not been made.]

So sad...

The Clintons Begin to Lose the Establishment

quote[With the Obama endorsement of Ted Kennedy following in the footsteps of endorsements from party luminaries such as Claire McCaskill, Janet Napolitano, and Kent Conrad, it's clear that Hillary Clinton is not getting the support of some of the establishment Democrats she might have been counting on. This is an important development that is not just about campaign momentum. "Party luminaries" comprise about 800 of the delegates to the Democratic convention -- approximately 20% of the total. Up until now, it has been widely assumed that the party establishment would rally heavily to the establishment candidate, namely Clinton, providing her a necessary boost of delegates should the race remain close.

With a general revulsion to the Clinton's campaign tactics now settling in, that assumption is now questionable. Moreover, even if Clinton should ultimately prevail in a close contest, she and her husband have so alienated a significant number of Democrats that there is likely to be a significant swath of delegates on the floor in Denver who are going to need a lot of persuading to keep them from embarrassing Clinton in her moment of triumph.

It is a truism but it's not worth winning the battle if by doing it you're going to lose the war.]

It's Official: I Endorse Barack Obama For President

quote[Connecticut Congressmen John Larson and Chris Murphy threw their support to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Thursday ahead of his planned visit to the state next week.

Larson, whose 1st District includes Hartford and the surrounding towns, is vice chairman of the House Democratic caucus. Murphy, whose 5th District covers the western part of the state, is a freshman House member.

The two plan to formally announce their endorsements at a Saturday rally. Obama's campaign said he will visit the state Monday, the day before Connecticut and 21 other states hold their Super Tuesday primaries.

Challenger Hillary Clinton, who is backed by Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and Comptroller Nancy Wyman, held a double-digit lead in the state in a University of Connecticut poll last week, but polls now show Connecticut to be a battleground.

Clinton campaigned in Hartford on Monday, and Obama's wife, Michelle Obama, attended a round-table forum Wednesday in Stamford before attending an evening fundraiser.

Larson's endorsement was first reported by the Journal Inquirer of Manchester on its Web site.]

Lieberman To Attend The Republican Convention?

quote[Lieberman also told the AP that his endorsement of McCain isn’t a step toward switching to the Republican Party. “I don’t have any intention of leaving the Democratic Party,” he said. “I want to be a senator.”

Still, he left open the door to attending the Republican convention if McCain wins the nomination. “I’d probably be more welcome there,” he said.]

I hope all the Connecticut "Zell Miller" democrats who voted for him take note.

Guess which driver's facing 21 years in prison — the drunk , rich, white one or the sober, poor, black one?

quote[But only in its aftermath did the collision become a travesty. That's because, even after blood tests showed that Varker was legally drunk, and even after sheriff's investigators learned that it was she and another girl who'd flashed a fake ID and bought Coors Light and malt liquor for the group, Varker hasn't been charged with anything.

Not underage consumption.

Not drunken driving.

And certainly not manslaughter.

Instead of charging the affluent white girl, the sheriff's officers arrested the other driver, a black man, a guy who wasn't even legally drunk.]

This really is a sad story.

Rudy To Pack It In?

quote[Rudy Giuliani, with his political life hanging in the balance here, hinted broadly Monday that he could end his presidential bid as soon as Wednesday.

Asked by reporters on his campaign jet to reflect on the uphill road ahead if he loses Tuesday's Florida Republican primary, Giuliani said, "When it's Wednesday morning, we will make a decision. The reality is that voting hasn't even started yet. I believe we are going to win."]

Attorney General Edwards?

quote[Illinois Democrats close to Sen. Barack Obama are quietly passing the word that John Edwards will be named attorney general in an Obama administration.

Installation at the Justice Department of multimillionaire trial lawyer Edwards would please not only the union leaders supporting him for president but organized labor in general. The unions relish the prospect of an unequivocal labor partisan as the nation's top legal officer.

In public debates, Obama and Edwards often seem to bond together in alliance against front-running Sen. Hillary Clinton. While running a poor third, Edwards could collect a substantial bag of delegates under the Democratic Party's proportional representation. Edwards then could try to turn his delegates over to Obama in the still unlikely event of a deadlocked Democratic National Convention.]

50 Cats Need New Home Fast

quote[Holly Harris has rescued animals for more than two decades. In essence, she runs her own no-kill shelter of sorts. She spends her own money to vaccinate and fix the animals she takes in.

Recently though, the fire marshal deemed the apartment and barn in which she and the cats live unsafe and illegal. This means that she has only four days to find a good place for 50 cats to live.

"I can't have it end like this. I've worked way too hard. These cats deserve better," Harris said.

She has devoted her life to the cats.

"I'm responsible. I need to make sure they all have homes. This is my chance," Harris said. "I need the public's help. If people don't get them, they'll be put to sleep."]

The Largest Pool In The World

quote[If you like doing laps in the swimming pool, you might want to stock up on the energy drinks before diving in to this one.

It is more than 1,000 yards long, covers 20 acres, had a 115ft deep end and holds 66 million gallons of water.

Yesterday the Guinness Book of Records named the vast pool beside the sea in Chile as the biggest in the world.]

Cool! Now I definitely want to go to Chile!

Fox's John Gibson Mocks Heath Ledger's Death

quote[ John Gibson of Fox News mocked the death of actor Heath Ledger by opening his Wednesday radio show with depressing funeral music. If that wasn't tasteless enough, his commentary put it well over the top. Gibson called Ledger a "weirdo" who had a "serious drug problem."

Gibson also played a clip from "Brokeback Mountain", in which Ledger starred, where he says "I wish I knew how to quit you." Gibson retorted, "Well, he found out how to quit you."

Gibson played a second clip from "Brokeback Mountain" in which Ledger said "We're dead," and thus repeated the quote himself. Throughout the remainder of the radio program, Gibson continually mocked Ledger, and at one point even suggested that Heath may have been suicidal over the presidential debate:

"Apparently Heath Ledger was suicidal and his friends saw it coming. I think he watched the Clinton-Obama debate last night. I think he was an Edwards guy, cause he saw his Edwards guy was completely irreverent," said Gibson.]

Contempt citations on hold as Dems, Bush craft stimulus plan

quote[Last week it was "pretty certain" that House Democrats would quickly move forward with contempt citations against two Bush administration figures who were stonewalling Congress. Then the economy started circling the drain.

The planned citations now appear to be on hold as Congress and the White House work on a bipartisan economic stimulus package, the central tenet of which involves cutting virtually everyone an $800 check.

Democratic leaders and aides tell The Politico that pursuing the contempt citations in conjunction with the stimulus package would "step on their message" of bipartisanship.]

Dow Sinks Another 200 in Opening Minutes

quote[Stocks fell in another rocky opening Wednesday, with investors uneasy about the health of the economy and corporate earnings after disappointing reports from big names like Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Motorola Inc. (MOT) In the first minutes of trading, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 261.10, or 2.18 percent, to 11,710.09.

Broader stock indicators also declined. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 28.97, or 2.21 percent, to 1,281.53, and the Nasdaq composite index slid 53.19, or 2.32 percent, to 2,239.08.

Weight Gain Of U.S. Drivers Has Increased Nation's Fuel Consumption

quote[As American waistlines have expanded since 1960, so has their consumption of gasoline, researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Virginia Commonwealth University say.

Americans are now pumping 938 million gallons of fuel more annually than they were in 1960 as a result of extra weight in vehicles. And when gas prices average $3 a gallon, the tab for overweight people in a vehicle amounts to $7.7 million a day, or $2.8 billion a year.]

Rush Limbaugh Is A Racist

quote[One week after claiming that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's suggestion that Sen. Barack Obama "has not done the kind of spadework" that Clinton has done was "not coincidental," Rush Limbaugh returned to the subject on his January 14 show. While discussing Obama, Limbaugh twice used the word "spade," which can be used as a racial slur. Specifically, Limbaugh said that "Obama is holding his own against both of them [Bill and Hillary Clinton], doing more than his share of the 'spadework,' maybe even gaining ground at the moment, using not only the spade, ladies and gentlemen. But when he finishes with the spade in the garden of corruption planted by the Clintons, he turns to the hoe. And so the spadework and his expertise, using a hoe. He's faring well." "Spadework" is a common term among political figures and the media.]

McCain-Lieberman in '08?

quote[Ever since Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman's decision to "cross the aisle" and endorse John McCain for president, some have wondered whether Connecticut's former Democrat might be angling for another shot at the vice presidency.]

Maybe this would FINALLY convince Connecticut NOT to re-elect him?

Republican Race So Unsettled Some Are Talking of a Possible Deadlocked Convention

quote[The Republican presidential race is so unsettled that some party officials are openly talking of a scenario that seemed almost unthinkable until now: the first contested GOP convention in 60 years.

Even if Republicans choose a nominee before they convene in Minneapolis-St. Paul on Sept. 1, there's a good possibility he will emerge weeks or even months after the Democratic nominee is chosen, giving Democrats an advantage in fundraising, organizing and campaigning. Congressional Republicans particularly wanted an early nominee to draw voters' attention from President Bush, whose low approval ratings could hurt the entire party in the fall.]

This would be the best possible scenario.

Romney: It's not torture unless you admit it

quote[CNN's Wolf Blitzer assails GOP presidential candidate and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney over his lack of a definite opinion on whether the widely debated interrogation method known as "waterboarding" is torture.

Even as competitor and Arizona senator John McCain, along with United States Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell, define "waterboarding" as torture, Romney remains strategically undecided.

"I just don't think it's productive for a president of the United States to lay out a list of what is specifically referred to as 'torture,'" he responds.]

Mischievous 'Filipino Monkey' could have triggered latest US-Iran row

quote[A heckling radio ham known as the Filipino Monkey, who has spent years pestering ships in the Persian Gulf, is being blamed today for sparking a major diplomatic row after American warships almost attacked Iranian patrol boats.

The US navy came within seconds of firing at the Iranian speedboats in the Strait of Hormuz on January 6 after hearing threats that the boats were attacking and were about to explode.]

Giuliani staffers reportedly asked to work without pay

quote[Staffers for former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani's presidential campaign have been asked to work without pay, according to a report by CNN.

Giuliani is counting on winning the delegate-rich Sunshine State of Florida to offset poor showings in early states like Iowa and New Hampshire.

Giuliani campaign staffers insist they are not out of money, according to the cable network. One staffer said that senior staffers suggested "they were basically told" to work without pay so money could go to advertising. Another staffer told CNN that it was a "voluntary" move only being made by senior staff members.]

N.H. Dems Runiing Out Of Ballots?

quote[New Hampshire voters were shattering turnout records Tuesday especially in the Democratic presidential primary, sending elections officials scrambling to find enough ballots to meet the demand.

"We're going to have historic turnout, there's no doubt about that," Pia Carusone, communications director for the New Hampshire Democratic Party, told RAW STORY.

Carusone said she was unaware of details regarding reports that polling locations were running out of Democratic ballots.

ABC News' Political Radar blog reported that officials were concerned about running out of ballots in at least four cities and towns.]

Wow!

HILL'S NATIONAL SLUMP

quote[The bottom has fallen out of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign nationally as new polls released yesterday show that Barack Obama has erased her once-commanding lead across the country.

The news is also not good for another New Yorker, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who has lost his front-runner status to former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

Obama and Clinton are now tied with 33 percent of the vote each nationally, according to the latest USA Today/Gallop poll.

The finding is a stunning change from mid-December, when Clinton held an 18-point advantage over Obama.]

Oh, sunny days...

Clinton Faces a Cash Crunch

quote[With momentum against her and a battle plan that appears to be staking everything on the big and expensive states like New York and California that hold their primaries on February 5, Clinton's campaign is putting new pressure on its fundraisers to come up with the cash she will need to carry her through. "Clearly, by every measure, I hear they are in a real financial crunch," says one prominent fundraiser. "Here's the dilemma: You have a situation where there clearly is a full court press to raise more money, but considering the state of decline of the campaign, there's a real question of whether people are going to want to give. It's more than just raising money; you've got to give people a sense of potential."]

An exhausted Clinton tears up

quote[Clinton paused, said that "special" days she has some "help" with her make-up. But then her voice broke and tears welled up in her eyes.

"It's not easy. It's not easy," she said. "This is very personal for me. It is not just political. It is not just public. I see what's happening. We have to reverse it. And some people think elections are a game; think like who is up who is down. It's about our country.]

I certainly don't see this playing very well.

A Drudge Intrigue: Is Hillary Dropping Out?

quote[Just as I finished writing about how Hillary is not done, Drudge shines the flashing light with some interesting verbiage. Note that it uses the plural "campaigns." It also cites Carville. One cannot be re-born until you die. What better way to do it than to plant the story of your demise, eventually pinning it on the underhanded dealings of a presumably noble competitor's campaign? Nothing like sucking the wind out of your competitions headline grabbing success with a staged funeral that doesn't take place. I don't buy it at all.]

I doubt it, but I'd really breathe easier if she did.

Obama Up 13 Points Against Hillary In N.H.

For Iraqi Street Cleaners, Scraps Include Human Flesh

quote[It must be a candidate for the worst job in Iraq.

It falls to Baghdad’s street sweepers to pick up the fingertips and scraps of flesh left behind after the emergency workers haul away the torsos and heads of bombing victims. They do the job without gloves, in all but the coldest weeks of winter.

If the attack comes while they are off duty, they get roughly $8 extra for cleaning up. Despite the grisly work, and the sadness at the deaths, that is a welcome sum when they are each paid about $6 a day. There were many such bomb bonuses paid in 2007, though markedly fewer than in past years.

But on Sunday, at year’s end, two municipal street cleaners, Imad al-Hashemi and Laith Mahdi Latif, said the bonuses would be something they could happily live without in 2008.]

Kucinich Urges Supporters To Choose Obama On Second "Ballot"

quote[Democratic Presidential candidate and Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich opened the New Year by publicly asking his Iowa supporters to vote for him in the caucuses this Thursday, and suggesting that if he did not make the 15% threshold, their second ballot should be for Senator Barack Obama. "]

Interesting, to say the least.

Independent voters could sway Iowa to Obama

quote[Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) watched a four-point advantage over Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) vanish overnight, according to Tuesday's daily tracking poll conducted by Reuters/CNN/Zogby.

"Clinton dropped two points to 28% heading down the stretch, falling into a dead-even tie with Obama and holding just a two-point edge over Edwards," according to the latest Zogby survey. "When second-choice voters were included in the Democratic equation, all three top vote-getters were virtually deadlocked, creating as close a race for the party’s nomination as we have seen in modern history."]

Frankly, I'm pulling for Edwards. But I'll take ABH (Anything But Hillary).
