Romney Strapped Dog to Car Roof

quote[ABC News' Jake Tapper Reports: Republican presidential candidate former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., has angered animal rights activists for strapping his dog to the roof of his car on a family trip from Boston to Ontario, Canada.

According to the Boston Globe, in one of the family's 12-hour drives to their family's cottage in Canada over 25 years ago, Romney strapped a dog carrier to the roof of the car for the whole trip -- with the family Irish setter, Seamus, inside.

Seamus protested in a scatological way, going to the bathroom on the roof of the car.]

Will Cheney get a Katrina trailer?

As Democrats work to defund Vice President's office, Republican asks 'Will Cheney get a Katrina trailer?'

A group of Democrats made their case Thursday afternoon to cut all funding for the executive branch office of Vice President Dick Cheney on the floor of the House of Representatives. The move prompted a Republican Congressman to ask whether Cheney would get a 'Katrina trailer' in place of his official residence.

"I offer a simple amendment that bars the executive branch from being used to fund an office that does not exist in the executive branch, the Office of the Vice President," said Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL), Chairman of the Democratic Caucus, who introduced the amendment. "There have been 46 vice presidents in US history, and not one of them...ever claimed [that the vice president was not part of the executive branch]."

Pointing to a four-part series that ran in this week's Washington Post on Cheney's role in the presidency of George W. Bush, Emanuel assailed the vice president for having too much power.

"Rather than claiming that he wasn't part of the executive branch...it sounds like he is the executive branch," the Illinois Democrat said. "There is no Cheney branch of government...He been held unaccountable for six years, and now he wants to be held unaccountable in the historical record."

Emanuel's amendment moved to cut all funding to the Vice President's executive office, as well as the funds for his residence.

The latter half of the amendment prompted Rep. Ralph Regula (R-OH), the ranking Republican on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services which funds the White House, to ask where Cheney would live.]

Family Doubts

quote[The last time Pfc. Andre Craig Jr., called home, on Saturday, he told his mom he was exhausted. The 24-year-old infantryman had been on patrol all night, family members said.

Then he left for a mission, they said. Soon afterward, the Humvee in which Craig was riding in was struck by an improvised explosive device in Baghdad. He died Monday from his wounds, according to the Department of Defense.

"At least he talked to everybody before he died," Craig's former girlfriend, Rhea Knight, said Wednesday. Her eyes welled when she noted that she still had a record of his last call to her in her cellphone.]

New Poll Finds That Young Americans Are Leaning Left

quote[The poll offers a snapshot of a group whose energy and idealism have always been as alluring to politicians as its scattered focus and shifting interests have been frustrating. It found that substantially more Americans ages 17 to 29 than four years ago are paying attention to the presidential race. But they appeared to be really familiar with only two of the candidates, Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, both Democrats.

They have continued a long-term drift away from the Republican Party. And although they are just as worried as the general population about the outlook for the country and think their generation is likely to be worse off than that of their parents, they retain a belief that their votes can make a difference, the poll found.]

A GOP Plan To Oust Cheney

quote[The big question right now among Republicans is how to remove Vice President Cheney from office. Even before this week's blockbuster series in The Post, discontent in Republican ranks was rising.

As the reputed architect of the war in Iraq, Cheney is viewed as toxic, and as the administration's leading proponent of an attack on Iran, he is seen as dangerous. As long as he remains vice president, according to this thinking, he has the potential to drag down every member of the party -- including the presidential nominee -- in next year's elections.

Removing a sitting vice president is not easy, but this may be the moment. I remember Barry Goldwater sitting in my parents' living room in 1973, in the last days of Watergate, debating whether to lead a group of senior Republicans to the White House to tell President Nixon he had to go. His hesitation was that he felt loyalty to the president and the party. But in the end he felt a greater loyalty to his country, and he went to the White House.

Today, another group of party elders, led by Sen. John Warner of Virginia, could well do the same. They could act out of concern for our country's plummeting reputation throughout the world, particularly in the Middle East.]

Interesting ideas here. I just don't see it actually happening. I think Cheney will stay until the end.

Top Democrat claims 'overwhelmingly positive' response to move to defund the Vice President

quote[While some would argue that Dick Cheney has sought unlimited power for his office in President George W. Bush's White House, the Vice President could soon be facing some major limits on his government bank account. A top House Democrat has announced his intention to offer an amendment to strip funding from the yearly budget for the Office of the Vice President.]

Supreme Court limits student speech

quote[The Supreme Court tightened limits on student speech Monday, ruling against a high school student and his 14-foot-long "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" banner.

Schools may prohibit student expression that can be interpreted as advocating drug use, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the court in a 5-4 ruling.

Joseph Frederick unfurled his homemade sign on a winter morning in 2002, as the Olympic torch made its way through Juneau, Alaska, en route to the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.]

The Bigots are Coming! The Bigots are Coming!

quote[Back in 2004, a month before the first wedding bells rang for same-sex couples, then-Gov. Mitt Romney offered his opinion that “Massachusetts should not become the Las Vegas of same-sex marriage.”

It wasn’t that he wanted to protect Massachusetts’ reputation. He wanted to protect the country from what he regarded as Massachusetts’ folly. For that purpose Romney unearthed a 1913 law that said couples couldn’t be married here unless the unions would be legal in their home states.

Frankly, I rather fancied the idea of Massachusetts as the new Vegas. What happens here stays here. At about the same time, Britney Spears explained her 55-hour marriage to a childhood friend by saying, “I do believe in the sanctity of marriage, I totally do. But I was in Vegas and it took over me.”

I can’t imagine an Elvis impersonator driving a pink Cadillac of to-be-weds up Beacon Hill, nor do I equate the push for marriage equality with the quickie wedding. But I can envision a Paul Revere character ushering couples into Old North Church or a Minuteman welcoming them on the Lexington Green. Like, totally. I was in Lexington and it took me over.]

Many American colleges balk at U.S. News rankings

quote[While the group did not call for an overall boycott of the rankings system, according to its newly named chair, Kate Will, the majority of members indicated their intent to stop participating in the reputation survey, which produces what she says is "not educationally valid research."

A letter was sent out last May by Lloyd Thacker, executive director of The Education Conservancy, and 12 college presidents to hundreds of their colleagues asking them to "refuse to fill out the U.S. News and World Report reputation survey and refuse to use the rankings in any promotional efforts on behalf of their college or university."

Thacker told CNN that "rankings have reduced students to consumers, education to product, and gaining admission into college a high-priced game that has to be played."]

It's about time this happened. It really doesn't matter where you go for your undergraduate degree and, in most cases, the quality of education you get depends upon how hard you work.

Paris Hilton prosecutor comes under fire

quote[The city prosecutor who condemned Paris Hilton’s early release from jail as celebrity favoritism is now under fire for a case of special treatment closer to home — acknowledging his wife was wanted for arrest for nine years.

The disclosure, first reported by the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday, is the latest in a mushrooming scandal that has engulfed City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo, who ran for California attorney general last year but lost.

According to the Times, a warrant for his wife’s arrest was issued by a judge in 1998 after she failed to appear in court on charges of driving without insurance on a suspended license in an unregistered car.]

Kerry asks compassion in immigration case of soldier's wife

quote[Sen. John Kerry on Wednesday urged U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials not to deport the wife of a Massachusetts soldier missing in Iraq, calling it a "test of our government's compassion" for service members and their families.

"It just strikes me as unbelievably inappropriate and indecent for the wife of a current, second-tour Purple Heart winner who is now missing in action to be living under this kind of cloud," Kerry, D-Mass., said in a conference call with reporters.

Army Spec. Alex Jimenez of Lawrence, who has been missing since his unit was attacked by insurgents in Iraq on May 12, had petitioned for a green card for his wife, Yaderlin, whom he married in 2004, Boston television station WBZ-TV reported on Tuesday. The soldier's wife is living with family members in Pennsylvania, the station reported.

Kerry wrote a letter asking Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff not to take any further steps in Yaderlin Jimenez's case until her husband is found.]

Here's an update for all the people who have expressed interest in this story (thanks for the emails). I too am outraged by this, and so I urge everyone who's equally outraged to write their senators and congressmen and urge them to take action to protect her.

Just so you know, if they do deport her the law requires that she can't reapply for entry for at least ten years!

Missing Soldier's Wife Fears Deportation

quote[The wife of a Lawrence soldier who is missing in Iraq may be deported.

Army specialist Alex Jimenez and his wife Yaderlin married in 2004.

According to their immigration lawyer Matthew Kolken, 23-year-old Yaderlin illegally entered the U.S. from the Dominican Republic in 2001.

While stationed in Iraq, Alex petitioned for his wife's green card. But that sent up a red flag about her status.

Kolken says Yaderlin cannot obtain one because she came here illegally. If she were to leave the U.S., Yaderlin would have to wait ten years before applying again for a green card.

Since Alex went missing in Iraq, an immigration judge put a temporary stop to the proceedings.]

Support for candidate goes through the roof

quote[One Lawrence man believes the national media are ignoring his presidential candidate of choice.

So for a few days he’s using a neighborhood rooftop to drum up support for Republican Congressman Ron Paul, of Texas.

On Sunday, William Burlbaw, a painter and handyman, sprayed “Vote Ron Paul President 08” with white latex exterior paint in three places on the shingles that face the street from the home he uses as a mailing address at 1003 W. 20th Terrace.

The roof is getting replaced Wednesday; the home’s owner is his friend Dana Barnett, who gave Burlbaw permission to use the house as a political message board for a few days.

“The more people that know about this man, the more chance we’ve got of getting our constitutional rights back,” said Burlbaw, a critic of President Bush who says he’s an independent.]

Bush reaffirms all options open regarding Iran

quote[US President George W. Bush said Tuesday he hoped to resolve the dispute over Iran's nuclear program diplomatically but insisted again all options, including military force, were on the table.

Bush made his remarks to reporters after Iran accused the United States of refusing to abandon plans to attack the Islamic Republic, which Washington says is trying to develop nuclear weapons.

Speaking before talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Bush said, "My position hasn't changed and that is that all options are on the table," a standard phrase that does not exclude the use of force.

Referring to Israel, which has raised the alarm about the possibility of a nuclear-armed Iran, Bush said, "As a strong ally, I view that as a serious threat."]

Navy vet: Chaplains tried converting me

quote[Navy veteran David Miller said that when he checked into the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City, he didn’t realize he would get a hard sell for Christian fundamentalism along with treatment for his kidney stones.

Miller, 46, an Orthodox Jew, said he was repeatedly proselytized by hospital chaplains and staff in attempts to convert him to Christianity during three hospitalizations over the past two years.

He said he went hungry each time because the hospital wouldn’t serve him kosher food, and the staff refused to contact his rabbi, who could have brought him something to eat.]

Romney: Since Mass. won't let people vote against gay marriage, we need a federal amendment

quote[CNN reported on Friday that "a proposed constitutional amendment to define marriage as between a man and a woman will not make it on the ballot in Massachusetts."

They then showed Mitt Romney objecting that "they could either take the decision away from the people or they could give the decision to the people, and the state legislature of Massachusetts decided to not allow the people to vote on the definition of marriage."

Romney's proposed answer to this refusal to allow "the people" to choose was that "we need to have a Federal marriage amendment ... because states like Massachusetts will take the course they did."]

If you want to know more about the credentials of a secure site, click the lock icon and Safari displays detailed information about the site’s security certificate.

Safari supports SSL versions 2 and 3, as well as Transport Layer Security (TLS), the next generation of Internet security. Safari uses these technologies to provide a secure, encrypted channel that protects all your information from online eavesdroppers. And Safari lets you use standards-based authentication such as Kerberos single sign-on and X.509 personal certificates, or proprietary protocols like NTLMv2 to log in to secure sites.

Safari also supports a variety of proxy protocols — services that help firewalls control what flows in and out of the network — including Automatic Proxy configuration, FTP Proxy, Web Proxy (HTTP), Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS), Streaming Proxy (RTSP), SOCKS Proxy, and Gopher Proxy.]

Cheney Misstates Military Oath

quote[Am I the only one who noticed? I hope not. But just in case, let me note that Vice President Dick Cheney made a huge misstatement to his West Point audience on May 26. I hope that, at a minimum, the West Point history majors noticed it. Near the end of his speech at the United States Military Academy commencement, Mr. Cheney stated:

"On your first day of Army life, each one of you raised your right hand and took an oath. And you will swear again today to defend the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. That is your vow, that is the business you're in."

Well, not quite. Here is the actual oath that newly minted officers in the U.S. Army take:

"I (insert name), having been appointed a (insert rank) in the U.S. Army under the conditions indicated in this document, do accept such appointment and do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter, so help me God."

Notice the difference? Mr. Cheney claims that U.S. Army officers vow to defend the United States, but as the oath quoted above shows, they don't. Instead, they vow to defend the U.S. Constitution. As a former student of mine, an officer in the U.S. military, said, "Professor, isn't it interesting that our highest obligation is not to protect the United States but, instead, is to protect the U.S. Constitution?" Yes, it is interesting.]

That's because he doesn't give a rat's ass about the constitution.

Fox analyst: 'Space aliens kidnapped president' and 'left this tool'

quote[On Monday, Fox News covered Vladimir Putin's threat that if the US government goes ahead with setting up a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe, Russia will target its own missiles at European targets.

The discussion led to an unlikely reversal of political positions, with conservative Fox political analyst Tammy Bruce describing the situation as "another glaring example of the growing incompetency of the Bush administration and his foreign policy," while Democratic strategist Bob Beckel concluded that "I support Bush on this ... and it's a strange day when I do that."

Bruce began by defending Putin and asked how we in the US would feel if Russian missiles were sited in Cuba or Honduras. She pointed out that the US missiles in the Czech Republic and Poland are supposedly intended to guard against the threat of potential Iranian long-range missiles, even though those missiles don't yet exist and we've said we're not going to allow Iran to develop them.

She then blew up about immigration and Iraq as well, saying, "I'm waiting to find the space aliens that kidnapped the president that I grew to admire after September 11 and left this tool behind. ... I'm furious."]

Al Gore against any attempt to impeach Bush

quote[Former US vice president Al Gore, a staunch critic of George W Bush, has said he doesn't agree with calls for impeaching the president due to lack of "time" and "consensus."

Many democrats feel that Bush should be impeached for allegedly misleading the country deliberately in the lead up to the war in Iraq.

"With a year and a half to go in his term and with no consensus in the nation as a whole to support such a proposition, any realistic analysis of that as a policy option would lead one to question the allocation of time and resources," Gore said during an interview with PBS.]
